I saw Nate Silver give a talk about honesty in and modeling of data while I was in grad school, so I knew I had to give him a Del Nortean counterpart in this episode

ha ha ha I knew she was a nod to Silver

I know pollsters presume that they are merely scorekeepers, but there has got to be some corollary to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle when it comes to polls and their effect on actual voting behavior

yes I am still torqued about 2016

Yeah for sure. I think it's impossible that you could be providing people information and not expect people to make decisions with that information in mind.

In the talk I went to, Silver was kind of frustrated that he and 538 got flack in both directions. When everyone was in consensus that Clinton was a shoo-in, Silver got flack for giving Trump a bigger shot, and when the election went to Trump, they got flack for getting it wrong.

Interesting stuff the kind of double-standards and expectations we have with such predictive data people...

to be trite but also real: stats are boring as all hell until they aren't

Especially when it involves something that has a lot of stats. It's easy for the important stuff to get lost in a sea of numbers
